Lesson 2: Laying Foundations …

5. Foundation three: godly order

Paul left Titus in Crete to “set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city” (Titus 1:5). He wrote, “Let all things be done decently and in order” (1 Corinthians 14:40).

Order includes:

  • Leadership: who leads, and who they answer to
  • Structure: how the ministry is organized
  • Accountability: how leaders are corrected and protected
  • Finances: handled with transparency and integrity (2 Corinthians 8:20–21)
  • Ministry flow: how people are welcomed, discipled, and sent

Order is not control. It is the structure that lets life grow safely.

In summary:

  • Order protects what God is building.
  • Set leaders, structure, accountability, and integrity in place.
  • Order makes room for growth.

6. Count the cost and build on the rock

Jesus asked, “Which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it?” (Luke 14:28).

He also said the wise man “built his house on the rock,” and when the storm came, it did not fall. The foolish man built on sand, “and great was its fall” (Matthew 7:24–27).

Before building, count:

  • The time it will take
  • The people you will need
  • The finances required
  • The spiritual battle you will face
  • The sacrifice it will cost you and your family

Building fast without a foundation is one of the apostle’s greatest pitfalls. Slow and solid outlasts fast and shallow.

In summary:

  • Count the cost before you start.
  • Build on the rock of obedience to Jesus’ words.
  • Foundations take time, but they hold.

Practical steps this week

  1. Write a one-page vision for what God has called you to build.
  2. List the core truths your work must stand on.
  3. Draw your leadership structure. Who leads, and who do they answer to?
  4. Count the cost of your next step: time, people, finances, and sacrifice.

Key takeaways

  • Jesus Christ is the only true foundation.
  • Build according to God’s pattern, not your own.
  • Lay three foundations: vision, sound doctrine, and godly order.
  • Count the cost before you build.
  • Build on the rock so the work stands in every storm.

Reflect

  1. Am I building from revelation or from my own ideas?
  2. Which foundation is weakest in my work right now: vision, doctrine, or order?
  3. Am I rushing to build without counting the cost?

Prayer

Lord, You are the chief cornerstone. Let everything I build line up with You. Show me Your pattern clearly, and help me write it so others can run with it. Give me patience to lay a solid foundation of vision, truth, and order. Let what I build stand through every storm. In Jesus’ name, amen.
