Fatherhood and Sonship

6. True Sons and Daughters Bring Healing and Speak Truth

Scriptures: Galatians 6:1–2; Ephesians 4:15; Proverbs 27:6

Honor includes the courage to speak with love.

There may be a moment when a son or daughter needs to say privately:

“Father, I love and respect you. I am concerned about what happened, and I do not believe it was right.”

Fathers and mentors also need encouragement, perspective, and correction. A position of leadership does not remove human limitations.

Speak humbly. Be specific about what you observed. Make room to listen. Seek restoration rather than the satisfaction of winning an argument.

Mature fatherhood also makes room for these conversations. A healthy spiritual family can receive honest concern without automatically treating it as rebellion.

A true son or daughter cares enough to help their father return to what is right.

7. True Sons and Daughters Watch Their Father’s Back

Scriptures: Exodus 17:10–12; Ecclesiastes 4:9–12; Ephesians 6:18

When Moses’ hands became heavy, Aaron and Hur supported them. They recognized a practical need and helped him endure.

This gives us a clear biblical picture of faithful support.

Watching someone’s back means praying, noticing burdens, guarding entrusted confidences, and offering practical help. It means refusing to participate in betrayal and bringing genuine concerns through appropriate channels.

I use “covering the back” as a picture of this kind of care. The armor passage in Ephesians does not teach that God deliberately left our backs unprotected for spiritual sons and daughters to cover. It does, however, call us to persistent prayer for one another.

God remains our ultimate protector, and He calls us to support one another faithfully.

Sometimes the strongest expression of sonship is recognizing that the person who has strengthened everyone else now needs help standing.

Will You Complete Your Journey?

Elisha’s faithfulness began before the final journey. He had already followed and served Elijah. Traveling through Gilgal, Bethel, Jericho, and across the Jordan brought that commitment into focus.

For us, these places can become questions of the heart:

  • Gilgal: Will I allow God to prepare my character?
  • Bethel: Will I turn revelation into loving responsibility?
  • Jericho: Will I keep obeying beyond previous victories?
  • Jordan: Will I accept the responsibility of my calling?

True sonship and daughterhood become visible in daily choices: loving the person, praying consistently, serving sincerely, protecting dignity, building honestly, speaking truth, and offering faithful support.

And true spiritual fathers and mothers nurture that growth, leading people toward maturity in Christ.

Before Elisha carried the mantle, he walked faithfully beside his father.

Father, give us clean hearts in our spiritual relationships. Teach us to honor, serve, pray, and speak truth in love. Help leaders nurture those entrusted to them, and help sons and daughters grow into faithful servants of Christ. Give us grace to complete the journey You have assigned to us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
